インド的ベランダ菜園 / Indian veranda garden

How old are you（前回のブログ）を観て、とても好きだったと友人に伝えたところ、是非とも見せたい場所があると、ご近所のお宅に連れて行ってくれました。そこは映画同様、家庭菜園をしているおうちでした。屋上ベランダへの階段を登ると、そこには色とりどりの野菜があり、日本でもお馴染みの茄子やオクラの他に、インドならではの野菜も！

When I told my friend that I enjoyed the movie "How old are you (previous post)" very much, she introduced me to a place which is just like in the movie. It was her neighbor owning a garden full of vegetables and fruits. Besides vegetables common in Japan such as, okra, eggplant, I had a chance to see vegetables very Indian like!

案内してもらっている時に獲れたてのオクラを食べさせてもらいましたが、今でもあの美味しさを忘れることができません。

I still can not forget the fresh taste of the okra that I had while the garden owner guided us.

ベランダ菜園の他に、こちらの土地でも菜園をしているとか！私も自分で作った野菜に囲まれた生活を送りたいです！

She owns another garden besides the veranda one. I would like to live a life like her, surrounded by the vegetables you made!!

マラヤラム映画「 How Old Are You」/ A Malayalam movie named 'How Old Are You'

日本では馴染みの薄いマラヤラム映画。ちょっと古い映画ですが、好きな映画のご紹介です。

Still Malayalam movies are not known in Japan. When it comes to Indian movies, it is mainly Hindi and sometimes Tamil, coming from Rajinikanth's popularity among South India lovers. Today I would like to introduce a motivating film especially for women.

How Old Are You。「あなたは何歳ですか？」というタイトルの映画。主婦が失敗や逆境にもめげず奮闘する様子を描いた非常にエネルギッシュな映画です。私はこの映画を観て本当に驚きました。何故なら日本に比べてインドでの女性に対する社会の目は非常に保守的で、結婚後の女性の行動は制限される印象を受けるからです。25歳までには結婚をして（主にお見合い結婚）、結婚後は家に入り子育てに専念するという習わしが根付いているこの地で、30代半ばの主婦の起業映画が放映、おまけに大ヒットを記録するなんて！！夫婦共働きの家庭も勿論いますが、女性は男性から一歩引く、いわば内助の功が美徳となされているこの土地で、主婦が主役の映画があるとは何と素敵なんだろうと感動しました。

How old are you. From the title itself, you can imagine what the plot will be like. It is about a housewife in her middle thirties struggling with the conflict in herself, who becomes a entrepreneur. This movie is full of energy, passion and ambition but moreover, what makes this movie special is that the protagonist is a middle aged women, considered here to be opposite of active, and this is what made me a fan of this film.

After coming to India, I realized the conservative culture towards women here. Likely in Japan, but further more. Women are normally married until 25 of age mostly by arrange marriage, and have children, then stay in the house taking care of the family. I respect it in a way, but at the same time I feel that some women are trapped despite the talent they have in themselves. Of course, I see women working along with their maternity life, but somehow very less. So I was shocked to see this film which surely is a motivating film to housewives. I was a big hit and had a influence in many ways which I will post in an upcoming post.

主人公の主婦は、36歳と言う年齢が原因で、家族全員で海外に渡るという夢が絶たれ、おまけに娘にもおばさんと疎んじられる始末。ひょんなことから、ベランダで栽培していた無農薬野菜の美味しさが有名なシェフを感動させ、そこから彼女の快進撃が始まるという七転び八起き劇です。

The protagonist faces a problem for not being able to go abroad with the family due to her age, which is 36. Her daughter and husband criticizes and blames her for being old. While feeling depression, vegetables plucked from her veranda garden attracts a prominent chef and from that time onwards, her heroic story starts.

何気なく行っていたベランダ菜園をきっかけに、誰もが知る企業家になった彼女。終盤に、友人が彼女に誕生日のお祝いの電話をし、そこで「何歳になったんだっけ？」と質問します。彼女はそれに対して「年齢なんて関係ないわ」と返すのですが、そのあまりの男気溢れる言い方に、私は感涙の涙を流しました。女性に対して保守的な国でのこの映画の大ヒットは、次の時代の幕開け（大袈裟？）を示しているようでなりません。

From a housewife to a entrepreneur. At the end of the film, a friend of her, who always believed in her talent calls her on her birthday asking, "How old are you?", which her reply is "It doesn't matter." It is really hard to think this way when you feel that you are aging, but I wish I can feel confidently like her when I am at the same age.

この映画が世の主婦に与えた影響は数知れず、公開後に主人公と同じく家庭菜園を始めた方が多くいるそうです。家族の健康を考えた時に、食べ物の安全性に気を付けるようになるのは自然な流れだと思いますが、主婦を主人公に据えた切り口でこのテーマを扱っているのが、私がこの映画を好きな理由です。

I heard that after this film, many women started a garden at their house just like in the film. Considering about the safety of food, it is quite natural to come up with this idea, but placing a housewife as a protagonist is what makes this film amazing.

年齢を重ねても、いつまでも気持ちは若く、夢に溢れていたいものです。

Despite the age, I always want to be full of dreams :)

大好物ナンバーワン！アヴァロスポディを作るの巻 / My all time fav, Avalose Podi

インドに来て、恋に落ちた食べ物！アヴァロスポディ（Avalose　Podi）！日本でも売って欲しい！

Today I'd like to introduce my favorite, Avalose Podi. It might be exaggerating, but this might be the reason why I am in India ;P Since coconut is unavailable in Japan, I know it is difficult, but I wish this will be available someday....otherwise, how will I survive?? :(

初めて友人の家で食べた時は、大袈裟ではなく、身体に電流が走るぐらいの衝撃を受けました。どうしても自分で作れるようになりたくて、友人にレシピを教えてもらいました。以来毎週のように作っているぐらい大大大好きです！

The first time I had this was surely a memorial day for me. It was a strong shock to me that something so tasty and at the same time healthy is on earth. I wanted to be able to make it by myself and asked my friend to teach me and from that day, I have been making it nearly every week :)

まず米を準備します。

First of all, you need to prepare the rice.

米なら何でもいいというわけではないらしく、Pachari（パチャリ=生米）という米を買います。小さめのお米です。米粉での代用可。

It has to be Pachari, which is raw rice. You can substitute with rice powder.

3時間程水に漬けます。

Soak it in water for approx three hours.

水を浸けている間にBeemapallyにある有名なモスクへ連れて行ってもらいました。

While waiting for the rice to be ready, my friend took me to a famous mosque in Beemapally.

さて、帰宅したら次にすることはココナッツを削ること！

After returning to the house, my friend started to grate the coconut.

超早業！友人はあっという間に削りますが、私は1個削るのに凄い時間がかかります。ココナッツ削りの修行は続きます…。

This look easy from the outside, but when you try, it is hard work than you can imagine! Compared to my friend, who is a professional, I am still a trainee..and for a while I will be...I am sure about that.. 

お米水に浸けて3時間経ちました。水を切って、近所の製粉屋さんに持っていき、米粉にしてもらいます。ここでは米以外にも、チリやコリアンダーなどのホールスパイスもパウダーに出来ます。常時機械の轟音を聞いているお父さんの耳にはイヤマフが装着されていました。

When the rice is soaked enough, we headed to the mill shop to make the rice into powder. Besides rice, you can also make powder from spices, such as coriander and chilli and so on. Because of the roaring sound of the machines, the man in the picture was wearing an earmuff.

次に、米粉とココナッツを均一に混ぜます。塩を少し混ぜます。

Next, you mix the rice powder and coconut very well. Add a little salt.

そして火にかけます。

And then put it on flame.

茶色寄りの黄金色になるまでひたすら混ぜます。ココナッツがクリスピーになれば出来上がりの合図です。友人から聞いてはいたけど、ここまで来るのにかなりの根気が必要でした。30分位火にかけたでしょうか。おまけに蚊が発生する時間帯だったので、撃退という追加任務を背負いながらの料理時間でした。

This is the hardest part of the process where you need patience. Until it gets golden brown and the coconut is crispy, you constantly have to mix it for about 30 minutes. It was the time when mosquitos were bugging us, so we had another job along to beat them. 

新聞紙に載せて冷まします（マラヤラム語の新聞！）。冷ましている間にココナッツに含まれるオイルが新聞に吸収されます。

When it is ready, to let the excess oil from the coconut come out, put it on newspaper and let it cool down.

私はいつもバナナと一緒に食べますが、その他に砂糖や紅茶と混ぜて食べるのもポピュラーみたいです。

I usually have it with banana, but I heard it is also popular to have it with sugar and even black tea.

スーパーにも売ってはいますが、クミンが入っているので味が全く違います。また、どうしても手作りの味と比べると香ばしさの点で劣ります。正直不味いです！忍耐と根気がいる作業ですが、食べる時の至福感を想うと、作るのがそんなに苦ではないのが不思議です。それぐらい美味しい！

It is available in the supermarket but the taste is totally different. It has cumin in it and it is not crispy like the homemade ones. It takes time, but worth making it, because I am happy to be able to have this every day.

ケララ州発祥のアヴァロスポディ。個人的一押しです。

Bahubaliの舞台、Athirapally滝を観光 / Visiting the location of Bahubali-Athirapally waterfalls

Bahubali（詳細は前回の記事をご覧下さい）に出てくる滝のシーン。映画はカルナータカ州のものですが、この滝の撮影場所は何とケララ州なんです。トリシュールにあるアディラッパリー滝です。ミーハーですね、早速行ってみました！

By hearing that the waterfall in the initial scene of the film Bahubali is located in Thrissur, Kerala, I went to take a look how the actual waterfall looks like. The name of the waterfall is called, Athirapally.

トリヴァンドラムからコーチンまでは列車、コーチンから滝まではバスを利用しました。途中のChalakudyでバスを乗り換えます。

We took a train from Tivandrum to Cochin, and then got on the bus to a stop called Chalakudy.

このバスがあまりにも可愛くて撮影。

While waiting for the bus to the waterfall, I couldn't help taking pictures of this cute bus.

着いた！

I don't remember the exact time, but it took about an hour from Chalakudy to the waterfall.

遠方から臨む滝。雨期の時の水量はもっと凄いみたいです。

There is a path before the entrance, and from there, I took this pic. In the rainy season, the water will be more, just like in Bahubali.

チケットを購入して入場します。

After purchasing the ticket, you enter from this entrance.

滝までの遊歩道を歩くこと10分程、滝のお出ましです。ドーン。

Walking approx 10 minutes of a promenade, you'll be able to meet the waterfall.

滝が流れ落ちるすぐ近くは立ち入り禁止です。

It was prohibited to enter the water just near the waterfall falls down.

セキュリティ完備！おじさん二人体制で監視していました。

If you try to do so, there will be these two security guys warning you. 

立ち入り禁止エリアの手前は水に入れるようで、老若男女問わず、多くの人が水浴びを楽しんでいました。特に目立ったのが赤ちゃん。オムツが至る所に捨てられていたのが非常に残念でした。

折角の美しい景勝地を守る努力をして欲しいものです。

On the left side of this was an accepted area to enter the water. From young to old, mostly babies were enjoying and splashing the nature gift. One thing I was upset about was the pampers thrown away everywhere. Such a nature beauty would not exist without caring and maintaining...so please...

最後に撮影した動画を。雨期にもう一度訪れてみたい場所です。

I would like to come again during the rainy season.

大ヒット御礼！Bahubali！/ A blockbuster film, Bahubali

今年の夏前に公開され、瞬く間にインド映画興行収入1位（世界では3位らしい）を記録した「Bahubali」。友人にゴリ押しされて観てきました。内容は簡単に言うと、古代インドを舞台にした、恋愛あり、戦闘あり、のヒーローものです。外国人の私にとって困ったのは、オリジナルのテルグ語とタミル語でしか見れないということ。ゴリ押しされた友人にあらすじを聞いてから観たのですが、中々難解で、分かったような分からなかったような…といった印象…。でも大丈夫！相当お金をかけているであろう、半端ないスケール感のCGを大満喫しました（とか言いつつ、途中の戦闘シーンで居眠りしたのは秘密です）！

I guess this movie will be a legendary film in India cinema history. A blockbuster film named Bahubali,  which recorded the highest gross in India and the third highest worldwide has been in the theaters for months, which is a very rare phenomenon to witness here. I have watched this film in August, after hearing the enthusiastic recommendation from my friend. Originally, this is a Telugu film and another option was in Tamil. Here in Kerala, Tamil was available, so after studying the overall plot, I headed to the theater with my Japanese friends. Well, it was really tough for us to catch the story since it was an ancient tale with complicated relationships and of course we couldn't understand the language, but still it was worth watching because of the tremendous scale of the computer graffics you can see.

それにしてもインド映画には、現実ではあり得ない超常現象があまた登場するのは何故なのでしょう。Baahubaliもご多聞に漏れず、超常現象の数々を目撃することができます。

I am always astonished by all the supernatural phenomenons when watching Indian films and this movie was not an exception.

序盤の一場面。女性が自らを犠牲にして濁流の中に沈み、かかげた手の中には赤ちゃんが…。赤ちゃんギャンギャン泣き続けてて見ていて苦しくなります。

A photo capture of an initial scene of the film, where a lady is carrying a crying baby in her arm in a muddy stream. She was stabbed before this scene and decided to sacrifice herself to save the baby.

一晩明けて、近くに住む人々に無事赤ちゃんは助けられますが、女性はそれまで腕をこのままにしていたことになります…。恐るべし腕力です。

The next morning the baby was rescued by a nearby living tribe, that means, this woman was keeping this posture all night.

主人公は滝が流れる崖を登るのが大好きなのですが、ある日、隣の崖に美しい女性を見つけます。その女性に近づきたいがために、何と崖から崖へジャーンプ！最初は何度も失敗しますが、ついに女性のいる崖に着地することができます。現実的な映画が好みの私にとっては、まさにファンタジーの極致で、非現実的なことが起きる前提で観ないと「？」の連続でした。

Another scene is the protagonist jumps from a precipice to another to approach a woman. He is addicted to climbing the walls of a waterfall, and during his climbing routine, he finds this beautiful woman and instantly falls in love. I hope nobody will try to do the same(I would if I were a child!!), since this is a fantasy.

大ヒットを記録したこともあり、日本でも観れる日が来る気がします。そしてこの作品は2部作になっていて、第2部は来年公開だそうです。いろんな意味でスケールの大きいBahubaliです！

Responding to this huge hit, I expect it will be available in Japan as well. A sequel is to be released next year. It is a huge scale movie in many ways!
