アレッピーでボートレースを観戦 / Alleppey Nehru Trophy Boat Race Experience

ケララを訪れたことがある人が、ケララでどこが好き？と聞かれたら、「アレッピー」と答える方、多いのではないでしょうか。アレッピーはケララ州のちょうど真ん中辺りにある都市で、水上ボートクルージング、別名バックウォーターで有名な土地です。インドのベニスと呼ばれているそうです。

I have and assumption that there will be a high percentage of Alleppey lovers among the people who have been to Kerala. Alleppey is a scenetic place famous for its boat cruising called backwater. I have heard before that some call this place "Venice of India." 

マラヤラム語ではアレッピーは「ആലപ്പുഴ（アーラプラ）」という名で呼ばれています。

Alleppey is called "ആലപ്പുഴ (Alappuzha=zha is a pronunciation code for one "ra" of the other "ra" sounds in Malayalam)" in Malayalam. 

先日、友人の誘いで、このアレッピーで行われたボートレース「Nehru Trophy Boat Race」に行って来ました。インドのネルー初代首相にちなんで名づけられたレースで、年に一度開催される大きなレースみたいです。

I went to an annual boat race called "Nehru Trophy Boat Race" a month before, since my friend living in Alleppey was a staff there and invited me.

レースが始まるのは午後2時くらいみたいなのですが、席取りが尋常じゃないくらい大変とのことだったので、10時には客席に到着していたと思います。余談ですが、今年から外国人に対しては1500ルピー（約3000円）の入場料を取るようになったそうです。去年までは無料だったそうで…無慈悲過ぎます。私達はスタッフである友人の計らいで、関係者として入場させてもらいました。

The boat race itself seemed to be starting afternoon around 14:00 but the lack of seats compared to the audience, we had to hurry to keep our seats. We reached the venue around 10:00. Unfortunately, they ask 1500 rps per person for a foreigner as an admission fee starting from this year, but we were lucky enough to enter as an official.

この時間から選手たちは練習に励んでいました。この炎天下で体力の消耗半端なさそうです。

Before noon, even at the hottest time in the day, they were practicing hardly.

コースを最後まで漕ぎ終えたらボートごと水の中に沈んでいました。

天井にはファンがなく、暑さを緩和できるツールは入場の際に手渡された簡単なうちわのみ…。友人とぶーぶー文句を言いながらひたすらレースの開始を待ちました。そしていよいよ（というかいつの間にか？）、スタートです！鳴り響く応援の中、熱戦が繰り広げられました。ボートの向こう側には多くの小型ボートやハウスボートと呼ばれる大型のボートが見えます。これらのボートの上からも観戦出来るようでした。

There were no fans on the ceiling and the only tool we had to alleviate the heat was a handy fan with a ghee advertisement on it handed when we entered the venue. We waited for the race to start patiently, but sometimes complaining :p You can see many sizes of boats on the opposite bank and there also, you can watch the race. Finally the race started with a big roar from the audience.

大小様々なボートが使われていましたが、中でもこのスネークボートのレースは迫力満点でした。これだけ長いボートだと、息を合わせるのも大変そうです。鈴と棒でリズムを取る人が何人か配置されていました。

A small boat, a big boat....we were able to witness several sizes of them. My favorite was this huge one, which is called "Snake boat." This lengthy boat seemed to be hard to move, so there were a few members to make a rhythm for the people rowing.

選手には若い人もいましたが、意外に目立ったのが、毎日のチャイタイムによってお腹がぽっこり出ているお父さん達。こうやって戦っている姿を見ると、いつもより5割増しぐらいにかっこよく見えてしまうから不思議です。

Surprisingly, besides the young men, I saw many of old men rowing, who has a big stomach with the daily chai time and they seemed to be appealing than ever!

途中でこのおじさん達のご飯を少し頂きました。自分のご飯も持っていたのですが、食いしん坊の貪欲さはここでも威力を発揮したのでした。それにしても地べたで食べるってワイルドです！

These wild men eating on the floor shared me there lunch a little. Maybe I looked like a cheetah aiming for their food? By the way, I actually had a lunch of my own.

レースは実質2時間ぐらいだったでしょうか？正直段取りがあまり良くなく、ダラダラと進む印象が否めず…。 これぞインドスタイルと思えば少し気が楽になりますが、猛烈な暑さも相まって、途中結構ゲンナリしていました。

The race was approximately two hours. Honestly saying, the arrangement wasn't that good, so it was hard to understand what was going on as a foreigner sometimes.

インド人でも生では見たことがない人が多いこのレースを観戦出来たのは友人のお陰です！友よ、本当にありがとう！

Even many Indian citizens haven't seen this race with their own eyes, so we had a very precious experience, thanks to my "official staff" friend!!

イスラム教の結婚式に出席 / Attending a Muslim marriage

インドではヒンドゥー教、キリスト教、イスラム教（インドではムスリムという呼称が一般的）の3つが主に信仰されていて、街中には寺院、教会、モスクを多くみかけます。宗教は生活の一部としてごくごく当たり前に個々に寄り添っています。日本ではウエディングドレスを着るのが一般的な結婚式ですが、インドでは信仰している宗教によって祝い方にもそれぞれの違いが見られます。先日、イスラム教の結婚式に出席してきたので、その様子をお伝えします。

In India, you can see religions coexisting together. The main three religions here are Hindu, Christianity and Muslim. It is amazing to see a temple, a church and a mosque gathering together at an intersection. For all the rituals each religion has, you can see a clear difference between them and one example is the marriage. You can take a sneak peek of what Muslim marriage is like in this post.

友人のいとこの結婚式です。朝早く、友人家族がチャーターしたバンに皆で乗り込みます。

It was my friend's cousin's wedding. I met the bride back in Chennai and knew she was a beauty. I was sure she would definitely be a breathtaking beauty with the dress and all the jewelry.

こちらのバンに乗りました。運転めちゃくちゃ荒い！小さい女の子達は吐き気をもよおしていました。そりゃそうだ･･･。会場に行く前に、花嫁さんのお宅に立ち寄ります。

My friend's family hired a van. Commonly here, the driving is always like way too speedy so the little girls were suffering from the nauseousness all the way. We stopped by at the bride's house before going to the wedding venue. 

激しい運転から解放されてリラックス中です。

They look happy and relaxed released from that stunt driving.

親戚が一同に会すので皆嬉しそうです。

Everyone had a big smile on their face to be able to see their relatives.

イドゥリ、アッパム、チキンカレーを頂きました。

I had idli, appam with chicken curry at their place.

花嫁さんの登場です！金！金！金のネックレスに金のバングル！とても重そうです！このアクセサリーの数が多ければ多い程、裕福な家庭であると認識されるそうです。そしてこのアクセサリーは新婦から新郎への結婚持参金の一部として取り扱われます。結婚における費用全ては基本的に女性側のご両親が用意します。

And here comes the bride! She was more beautiful than I expected. All the necklaces and bangles are made of gold. I have never seen tons of gold like this. Normally, the expenses for the marriage will be prepared by the bride's parents. The more gold jewelry you have on you, the more prosperous your family is, is the common understanding here. 

イスラム教の結婚式での花嫁衣装が他の宗教と違う点の一つに、このベールが挙げられます。とても綺麗です。

What distinguishes the Muslim marriage from other religions is this veil she is wearing. Amazing beauty like a princess.

再びバンに乗り結婚式の会場へ。

Again we got on the van and headed for the marriage.

トリバンドラム中心街から北東に1時間半程の、Pathanapuramという場所です。会場の名前も縁起が良いです。

The place was Pathanapuram, a place of tranquility far away from the city disturbance. By car, it was around an hour and a half trip from the center of Trivandrum. The name "crown" of this auditorium seems be having a good fortune.

入り口近くで記念撮影！友達と、チェンナイに住むいとこです！このいとこが、ドラえもんとクレヨンしんちゃん好きの面白くて可愛い女の子なんです。久々に再会できてテンション上がりまくりでした。

Say cheese! My friend and her cousin from Chennai. The girl is a huge fan of Japanese animations, such as, "Doraemon" and "Crayon Shinchan" and that is such an honor! She has such a sunny disposition. I was so willing to meet her. 

ウェルカムジュースのサービススタンドです。これは以前出席したヒンドゥー教の結婚式でもありました。ブース前で、お友達のお母さんにポーズをとってもらいました。はにかみ笑顔が可愛い！

Near the entrance, there usually is a welcome drink stand. I asked my friend's mother to let me take a picture of here. I really like the scent of bashfulness you can find in her smile.

式場です。壁に新郎新婦の名前、そしてお花とリボンが飾られています。

This is where the memorable marriage is going to happen. You can see the names of the groom and bride on the wall. The flowers are all real ones alike in Japan.

出席者の衣装はサリーやチュリダー（前の写真で友達といとこが着ていた、長いワンピースのようなもの）が多かったですが、イスラム教の結婚式なので、Pardha（黒い長袖のマキシロングワンピ）やHijab（手前の女性が被っている茶色いもの。肩下まである長いキャップのようなイメージ）を身に着けている女性の割合も一定数いました。

Besides the saree and churidar, you can see women wearing "Pardha (a black maxi length dress with long sleeves)" and "Hijab (like a long cap where the fabric comes under your shoulder. The women on the right is wearing a brown one)" which is a typical Muslim outfit.

花婿さんと花嫁さんです。この花嫁さんが別嬪さんなんで、花嫁衣装が更に映えていました。

夫婦の証である、ネックレスであるThaaliを花婿さんが花嫁さんの首に付けます。付けた瞬間に一面の紙吹雪が飛びます。これが結婚式のハイライトです。二人が正式に夫婦となった瞬間です。

When the groom puts a necklace called the "Thaali" on her neck is the highlight of the wedding. This means they officially became husband and wife, and people surrounding them shower cellophane pieces. In a Hindu marriage I attended before was a pink flower used for this shower.

だいたいが、この後に別室にある部屋に移動して食事を取ります。

Usually, people have food after this function. 

食事をした場所です。結婚式が行われたすぐ隣にある建物の中です。

The place we had food which was right next to the marriage auditorium.

インドの代表的なイスラム料理、ビリヤニの登場です！高級品であるマトンビリヤニです。食べ放題です。

A famous Muslim dish everyone loves, biriyani!! The meat is mutton. You can have as much as you like.

その後会場入り口に移動して、花婿さんと花嫁さんが出てくるのを待ちます。こちらの車に乗って、会場を去って行きました。この日から、花嫁さんは旦那さんの住む家に同居します。多くは旦那さんのご家族との2世帯同居です。

After the meal, we waited for the groom and bride outside to send them off. They left the place with this car. From this day onwards the bride will live with the groom's family.

日本の結婚式と大きく違うのは、ご祝儀や座席表がないことです。家族や親しい友人だといくらかのご祝儀を渡すこともあるそうですが、日本のように出席=ご祝儀ではないようです。出席人数が決まっているわけでもないので、結婚会場は概して、さながらライブ会場のように人でごった返していて、立ち見もザラです。運悪く立ち位置が悪いと花婿さんと花嫁さんが良く見えません。日本のようにアナウンスが入ることもなく、淡々と進行していくイメージです。

Attending a marriage in Japan means you gift money to the bride and groom. Average amount is 30,000 yen onwards. I heard in India, if you are a relative or a close friend of the groom or bride, then some will give them a certain amount but not as much like in Japan. The attendees number is not firmly fixed like it is in Japan so the auditorium is always crowded and if you are late to reach the venue, there might be a possibility to see the marriage standing. What is worse that if you are unlucky, you hardly can see the groom and the bride :( So it is always recommended to be there early ;) The is no announcement guide and this is another different point I observed.

見送ったところで、再び皆でバンに乗り込み、花嫁さん家族のお家に別れの挨拶をしに立ち寄ってから帰途へつきました。

After the farewell to the groom and bride, we went back home with the again thrilling van ride.

Neyyattinkaraでの滞在。私のマラヤラム語が試されるとき！/ A stay at Neyyattinkara, evaluation time for my Malayalam skills!

前回の記事からの続きです。先日、お友達の旦那さんのご実家にお邪魔して来ました。Neyyattinkaraと言って、トリバンドラムからバスで1時間程の距離にある場所でした。本当に良くして頂いて、言葉はうまく通じなかったけど、私は彼らの大ファンになりました。

A few weeks before, I visited my friend's husband's parents house located at a place called Neyyattinkara. It is around an hour from the center of Trivandrum city by bus. Due to my poor Malayalam skills, I faced communication problems, but I was so grateful for their great hospitality and instantly became a big fan of them.

9月の末に日本に一時帰国する際に、友達のお母さんと一緒に飛行機に乗ることなっています。事前に会っておきたいとのことで、お宅にお邪魔することになりました。でも、お母さんのお家はアレッピーにあるので、旦那さんの実家にお母さんが来て、そこに私が会いに行くという運びになりました。ハプニングは起こるものです。突発的な雨が原因で、本来お邪魔する日程が延期に…。折角だから週末に来て泊れば？との友達の提案により、図々しくも泊らせて頂くことになりました。

Why I visited Neyyattinkara? There was a certain reason. I am planning to return to Japan soon for a while, and my friend's mother is going to accompany me. We were planning to meet in advance in India, but since her place is Alleppey, which is a bit distant from my place, we decided to gather at husband's parents house for a day. Unfortunately, the planned date was postponed due to the heavy rain, and I ended up sleeping over at their house later on.

仕事が終わってからバスを乗り継ぎ目指す場所へ…。夕方19:00頃到着！Neyyattinkaraはケララ州の中でもお隣のタミル・ナードゥ州に近い場所に位置していることもあり、タミル・ナードゥ州に向かうバスが沢山通っていました。私が乗ったバスもタミル・ナードゥ州のナーガルコイル行きでした。行き先の表記はタミル語のみ！この不安を煽る感じ、スリリングです！こんな時のために備えてタミル語も勉強しようかな。

Hopping on the bus after work and I arrived at their place around 19:00. Neyyattinkara is a place close to the neighbor state, Tamil Nadu. Because of that, there were many buses on the road heading to cities in Tamil Nadu. In fact, the bus I got on was a bus to Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu. All the signs inside and outside were in Tamil language! To be prepared for a situation like this, I'm thinking about studying Tamil too ;p

Inside the house, I found my friend's painting. Forgot to take the pic, but there was a painting of the husband's also. They are talented artists!

悶絶級に可愛い赤ちゃんワンコにも会えました！人懐っこくってたまりませんでした。旦那さんの実家では合計2匹のワンコがいました。

There was an adorable puppy there....There were total two dogs at their place.

必然的に実家の犬を思い出します。ぽてこ、元気かな…。

Whenever I see a doggy, I remember my dog back in Japan...Wonder how she is doing...

広大な土地には沢山のココナッツの木がありました。

There were tons of coconut trees around their house and amazingly it was all their property!

家の横にはココナッツの実が沢山置いてありました。こんなにあったら買わなくて良いですね。

タピオカ芋もお家で作っているとか。何という贅沢！

They also make tapioca at their place.

ジャックフルーツ！私ごとですが、私はジャックフルーツの大ファンです。食べようねーと言って下さっていたのですが、忙しくて結局食べれませんでした。

And...my fav!! Jackfruit!! We were planning to eat this but since we were busy with some plans, we could not make it.

何故忙しかったかと言うと…？？ヒンドゥー寺院に行くのに忙しかったのです。

Why we were busy?? It was because of going to the hindu temples.

2つの寺院を訪れました。1つ目はシヴァ神の寺院。

There were two temples we visited. First one was a Shiva temple.

この先が本堂です。本堂は写真撮影不可（基本的にどこの寺院も内部は写真撮影不可）。「オーム、ナマシヤヴァ」と書かれています。お祈りする時の言葉です。

Usually, photography is not allowed inside any hindu temple, which is inside this door in this pic. The plate says, "Om namashivaya" which is a prayer.

次はバスに乗って、Neyyattinkaraバス停に近い寺院へ。こちらはクリシュナの寺院です。

Next, we headed for a Krishna temple near to Neyyattinkara bus stop.

大きなシヴァ神の像があります。左に見える馬の更に左にクリシュナがいました。バガヴァッドギータがモチーフです。

There was a little quiz program going on about "Bhagavad Gita."

旦那さんのお母さんが勇んで参加しました。フレーフレーお母さん！応援するまでもなく、難易度の高そうな問いの全てにスラスラと答えていました。お母さん凄い！

My friend's husband's mother joined, and she was answering each question without hesitating! Amazing!!

もちろん美味しいご飯もたくさん頂きました！

Of course I had yummy dishes at their place.

イディヤッパム（米粉で作ったそうめんを固めたようなもの）とベジタブルカレー。

お父さんが作ってくれました。お父さん優しいです。

Chicken curry, chicken fry, and cassava. Cassava was cooked by the husband's father while the two mothers and I were at the temple.

いつも感動する、まな板を使わない野菜切り。今回もお母さんが切る様子を激写しました。指の上で器用に野菜を切るのですが、高速すぎてブレまくりです。

This pic is a capture of the always impressive vegetable cutting without using the cutting board. They easily cut it smoothly on their hand using a little knife. The pic is blur because she was so fast in cutting the onion!

キュウリの種類も一杯。この他にも種類があります。

近所に住む旦那さんのお母さんのお姉さんと妹さん、そのご家族に挨拶する機会にも恵まれました。

I had a chance to meet the husband's mother's sisters and their family living nearby.

とても残念だったのは、私のつたないマラヤラム語では意思疎通がうまく出来ないことでした。ボディランゲージに大分助けられましたが、言葉でのやりとりがもっとうまく出来ればなーと、改めてマラヤラム語の勉強を頑張ろう！と一念発起した次第です。

What I regret about this stay is my Malayalam skill is sooooo poor that I constantly had problems communicating. I wish I can at least understand what people want to tell me or ask me in normal conversation. It is always too fast!

次にお邪魔する時には君にもマラヤラム語で話しかけるね！

ケララ出身のお友達と日本で初対面！/ Meeting my Malayalee friend for the first time in Japan

かなり久々の投稿です…。その間にこのブログを訪れた方々、ありがとうございます。ここ数カ月、相変わらずせわしなく外出していました。その中でも印象的だった 出来事をご紹介したいと思います。彼女との出会いは遡ること去年の秋頃…独学てマラヤラム語を学ぶことが困難だと悟った私は、インターネットでオンラインの先生を募集しました。いくつかのコンタクトがあった内の一人が彼女でした。「私はケララ出身です。今は日本に住んでいて日本語を勉強しています。お互いに日本語とマラヤラム語を教えあわないですか」という提案がメールに綴られていました。それから週に一回ほど、スカイプで話すようになりました。徐々に私の都合で減ってしまいましたが…。

It has been more than half a year from my last post. I deeply apologize for those who visited my blog during that time. As always, I've been busy roaming around places since I am defined as a travel addict :P I'd like to post about one of the impressive encounters I had in these months.

I happen to meet her online while I was seeking for a Malayalam teacher. She sent me a message saying, "I am from Kerala living in Japan now. Rather than teaching, I would like to exchange Japanese and Malayalam since I am studying Japanese." That is how it started. From then, we used to talk via skype once in a week, but due to my travel addiction and some other engagements, the frequency is decreasing... 

ずっと対面してみたいと思っていた彼女に、先日日本に帰国した際に会うことが叶いました。彼女と旦那さんが住む岐阜県の多治見市に行って来ました。

We were very good friends online. She taught me many useful words and was always there to help me. A few months ago, I had a chance to meet her in Japan, a place called Tajimi, located in the middle part of Japan.

初めて対面する彼女はスカイプで会うのと変わらず、穏やかで笑顔がとても素敵な女性でした。彼女達のご自宅に一泊させて頂いて色々な場所に連れて行って頂きました。

By meeting her, I didn't feel nervous at all. She was the same calm and smiley lady I always knew in skype. They took me to places during my two days visit.

一日目は「永保寺（臨済宗の寺院）」を訪れました。フィリピン人のお友達も一緒です。ここに辿りつくまでちょっとしたトレッキングコースになっていて、秘密の花園を探すようで楽しかったです。彼女はお腹に赤ちゃんがいるので心配でしたが･･･。

The first day, we went to a buddhist temple named "Eihoji" with their friend from the Philippines. It was like a trekking adventure just like "The Secret Garden" to reach the temple. Since she was pregnant I was worried about her though...

Hmm....This scenery reminds me of India?? Perhaps, Palakkad?

トレッキング後のご褒美の見事な景観！写真では見づらいですが、所々に観音様がいます。水が流れ落ちる眺めと音色がそれはそれは美しかったです。

After the trekking, there we found the "Secret Garden." It's hard to see, but you can see "Kannon sama (Buddist deity)"  here and there. You can see a little stream running down too.

かなり広い境内を味わいながらゆっくり回ります。

心が洗われます。

What a serene scenery.

教会にも連れって行って頂きました。中は撮影禁止でしたが、レトロな内装にパイプオルガンの奏でる音がとても厳かな場所でした。特筆すべきは庭にある葡萄！

We also went to a church. Photography was prohibited inside...boo hoo...It had a nostalgic furnishing and a solemn atmosphere. What is special about this church is the grapes!!

秋にはワインになって私達の舌を楽しませてくれるそうです！たわわに実っていました。

You can enjoy wine from there grapes in autumn. Looks good!

美味しいパン屋さんにも行きました！もちもちフワフワのパンの数々…是非また行きたい場所です。

Amazing bakery. All the breads were tasty...I would definitely visit this place again. 

二日目は多治見と言えばのせともの巡り！日本人のお友達と一緒に巡りました。

Tajimi is prominent with its ceramics. The second day was a ceramic tour with their Japanese friend. 

和風なものからちょっと北欧風のものまで豊富なデザインが揃っていました。

百人一首のお皿！お皿というより飾り物のプレートでしょうか？

昼食はひつまぶし！

Lunch was "Hitsumabushi (a dish of an eel)" with "Udon(Jpanese noodle)."

朝ごはんと夕ご飯は彼女達のご自宅でご馳走になりました。いくつか厳選してご紹介します。

Other meals were served at their house. I would like to show some I selected.

ベジタブルカレーとアッパム（米粉とココナッツミルクで作られる厚いクレープのような感じ）。

Appam(made with rice powder and coconut milk which tastes like a thick crepe) with vegetable curry.

人参のトーレン（ココナッツ炒め）。

Carrot thoran(a dish fried with grated coconut).

チキンカレー。

Chicken curry.

豆腐のカレー。日本とインドのコラボカレーです。豆腐はパニール（インド版チーズ）のようで美味しかったです！

Tofu(a bean curd) curry. Collaboration of Japan and India! Tasted like paneer(Indian cheese) and was tasty!

どれもとっても美味しかったです！それも優しい味でした。料理は作り手の心が反映されるなとつくづく思いました。

Everything was delicious and had a soft taste just like her character. I always think cooking is a reflection of the cook's personality.
