As mentioned in my previous post, nowadays I've been roaming around places in Kerala and I'd like to introduce about a place called Palakkad which knocked me out.
Palakkad is a place full of greenery where you can see paddy fields and palmyra trees all around. It is more like a rural area more than a city and perhaps because I grew up in the country side, this place made me relax a lot.
Even if it has the seventh largest population in Kerala, you can not find the place to be introduced in Lonely Planet nor Chikyu no Arukikata(major travel guide in Japan) but I strongly recommend this is one of the highlights of your trip to Kerala if you would like to feel the living of the country side.
The trip happened suddenly. My two friends(husband and wife) accompanying me at the concert in my previous post, both happened to be from Palakkad and they were planning to go home for the weekend and bring back some rice and vegetables harvested. They kindly asked if I would like to join their trip and I said, "Why wouldn't I" and, like that, the next week, we were on our way.
From Trivandrum it took about 7 hours by train then transfer to a bus which is around 30-40minutes drive, and after that, ride on a bike for 20 minutes.
My friends house is closer to Thrissur a train station before Palakkad so we got off the train at Thrissur. Depart Trivandrum station at 17:30, arriving at my friends place around 1:00 after midnight. It was fun, but at the same time exhausting a bit :p
The place I stayed is the husband's parents house. The parents live together with my friends elder brother, spouse and their 2 year old son. They were so kind to lend their parents bedroom for me to stay. A short sleep and I was supposed to be waking up at 6:00 I couldn't, so my friends aroused me from sleep.
I t was just time the mother was preparing breakfast.
This is part of the picture where you mainly boil rice. Fuel is mainly banana leaf, chips of wood, coconut shell, and whatever which is applicable.
Next to this, they have a gas cooker.
They come from a long line of farming family. Their farm and paddy field is right behind their house. Everyday I had tea at the paddy field which was one of the moments I loved.
Harvested paddy at the front yard.
The rooster and the hen were nibbling the paddy :)
Yeah! Breakfast time! The rice used for making idli is from their field. Self-sufficient living is my dream...I had more than 10 of them and the potato curry and sambal accompanying the idli was tasty as well.
After having breakfast, my friend took me to a little tour in their house.
More than a yard, it seemed to be like a little farm to me since they had fruits and vegetables everywhere.
黒い実の前の状態は初見だったのでこの時相当感動しましたが、この後どこでも見受けられることを知り、そのうち見向きもしなくなります…慣れって恐い(^^;
Seed of black pepper.
It was my first time to actually witness a pepper seed before black so this was very impressing but afterwards I didn't feel anything when I found it because they were everywhere...
The leaves of black pepper.
A huge mango tree. This picture was taken from the rooftop.
You can have a hole bunch of them at the season.
Drumstick tree. Ditto as the black pepper, I got used to it after a while :p
Drumstick is a vegetable frequently used in South Indian dishes.
Ladyfinger in front of their house.
This is a popular vegetable as in Japan too.
Papaya tree. I wonder how they pick the fruit...by climbing the tree?
Green chili. This is more spicy compared to the green chili(Ao togarashi) in Japan.
Next, we headed to the neighbors.
Straw to feed the cows.
Enormous pumpkin!!
Another neighbor.
They are a rubber farmer. All of the trees in the picture a rubber trees.
Now the food I had is digested so we will go to a fun drive and discover more about Palakkad.
